How to Make the Most of Your Next Vacation

By: UCPath Center

When you live in an amazing city like Riverside, California, there’s no end to the variety of pastimes available in your own backyard. We’ve researched the best money-saving tips to get you where you want to go and still stay within your budget, all applicable to potential new residents relocating to Riverside. So pack a lunch and go explore – half the adventure is getting to know your new hometown.

Take a Day Trip

Not all road trips have to cost an arm and a leg. For the price of a tank of gas, there are plenty of opportunities within driving distance that can be a source of relatively inexpensive fun. Also, check your area’s recreation or community center for free summer activities. You might find that they have activities right in your city that you may have overlooked.

Hit the Library

Did you know that your local library may have passes and tickets available for use? Chances are, you might have free tickets to some great local attractions right under your nose. All you need is your library card and a tank of gas, so head to your local library and plan your vacation bucket list. Also, note that all libraries may not offer the same things. Your area may have many to choose from, so check them all and compare. The Riverside County library system along with the City of Riverside’s Main Library are great resources.

Check Deal Sites

Before you purchase tickets, check deal sites like Groupon for a discount. Amusement parks, local wineries, and restaurants often offer Groupon deals. If you are looking for ideas, hop on the site and browse through what is available in your area. You can sort by the type of activity you are looking for, or by how far you are willing to travel. Try something new and you might even surprise yourself.

Book Your Hotel Online

There are tons of travel deals available online. If you plan your stay ahead of time, the savings can pile up. Be sure to shop around. Different sites offer different deals so, before you hit checkout, always check for coupon codes. Sometimes sites will also offer a better price if you download their mobile app. Try the app HotelTonight for up to 60% savings on last minute road trips.

Use Fare Tracking

If you are planning your trip in advance, use a fare-tracking service to get the best price for your flight. Watching the fares over a period of time will give you the best idea of the price you want to pay and when it becomes available. This will only work if you have an extended period to be able to shop for your flight. If you are running out of time, you may need to consider another option, although sometimes fare-tracking services will also have last minute deals available to fit your wallet.

Avoid Checking Your Luggage

Taking luggage with you on a flight will cost you extra. A lot of airlines will charge you per bag that you check now, plus there is a strict weight limit. Avoid these extra charges by packing smart. Depending on the length of your trip, you might be able to get away with just packing a carry-on suitcase. Most airlines let you take a roller suitcase up to 21 or 22 inches right on the plane with you, avoiding the need for a checked bag. Just be sure to follow TSA guidelines for any liquids you are bringing on the plane. If you need to bring more liquids than allowed, consider purchasing them when you land.

Pack Your Own Food

For expert level savings, pack the cooler and bring your own picnic lunch. Eliminating the cost of food and drinks will keep the budget in check. If you are flying, consider having a box of food delivered to your hotel upon your arrival. Call your hotel and ask what is available. Often you can use a local grocery store delivery service, or if you subscribe to Amazon Prime, just order a box of food. Eliminating even one or two meals per day out at a restaurant will leave a significant amount of cash in your wallet.

Explore these hikes in Riverside.

Some of these tips will be hard to achieve if the city you live in doesn’t have much to offer in the first place. By relocating to a city like Riverside, California, entertainment opportunities, local attractions, libraries, and more are all available to fit in your budget. Plus, the affordable cost of living in and around Riverside makes several activities that much more accessible.

The UCPath Center is looking for the best of the best right now to come to join the team. View our current open career opportunities now.
